In 1927 the world premiere of “Mahagonny – ein Songspiel” took place as a commission for the music festival “Deutsche Kammermusik Baden-Baden”. It was Kurt Weill’s first collaboration with Bertolt Brecht. Caspar Neher designed the stage set as a boxing ring, Brecht directed it – the performance evokes enthusiasm from the critics as well as protests from the audience. Shortly thereafter, the score was withdrawn, and Brecht and Weill began developing the three-act, full-length opera “Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny” from the material. The “Songspiel” in its original form is still an extremely rarely performed work (press release)
