“How do you create a new cultural home for yourself as a displaced refugee? What do you take with you? What do you leave behind? In their new production of a unusual musical theater hybrid, Johannes Müller and Philine Rinnert tackle these questions by taking a look at history: the musical comedy Im weißen Rössl (1930) is the epitome of the German idea of Heimat staged as revue theater – and was banned by the Nazi Regime. However, the idea lived on in numerous productions of the piece put on by European immigrants in New York. One such testimony to cultural transformation was Jimmy Berg’s treatment of the comedy Das Weisse Rössl am Central Park – In schlechtem Deutsch und ebensolchem Englisch (The White Rössl of Central Park – in bad German and equally terrible English), performed in New York at the Café Vienna, a meeting place for emigrants. After tracking down this lost Rössl-version in Vienna, Berlin and New York, Johannes Müller and Philine Rinnert assemble the fragments to also recover the life story of its author, Jimmy Berg.”
